Why should you join the high school band?
High school band is unlike anything you have done before, it can greatly enhance your high school career, and is, very simply, the best experience you will every have. West Springfield’s band program has become well known, not only for its high standards of performance, but also for the quality of experience given to its members. We believe that our rigorous course of music study will help our students to grow and succeed in their musical, academic, personal and professional pursuits.
Imagine attending a new school...and not knowing anything about where to go, or who to talk to. The transition from middle school to high school is easier for band students because you will have over 150 friends to help you through this process. Incoming band freshmen have immediate contact with upperclassmen, in a big brother/big sister kind of way. High school band is very healthy for students in a multitude of ways.
A few facts to think about …
Band is a place for everyone. Band builds positive self-worth and provides a great place to belong.
We know that high school band students represent the top of the academic scale in our schools. Band students are averaging 62 points higher on SAT tests.
We also know band students are students who enjoy a successful high school career, go on to college and become the leaders in our society. There is a definite link between the top achiever academically and the band student. They are one and the same.
Music involves multiple forms of learning. It is one of the few academic disciplines that require a student to master skills and apply them in performance.
Music is suspected to be the key to unlocking the scientific mind.
Just a few more thoughts...
The first day of high school, you can walk through the halls knowing you have more than 150 friends to count on.
You will know upper classmen who can help with school work.
Few other classes offer you the opportunity to travel to places like Chicago, New York City, Atlanta, and Walt Disney World.
No other class offers...
–this much excitement,
–so much fun,
–so many friends!!
Thinking of joining marching band...
Is it difficult to march? Mr. Hoang, Mrs. Jeanes, and Mr. Bean marched once upon a time. If they can do it…ANYONE can! Don’t worry, we’ll teach you everything you need to know step-by-step.
How much time does marching band REALLY take? Marching Band has practices for 2 1/2 - 3 weeks before school starts, and then rehearses after-school for 2 1/2 hours, three times each week. Obviously, there are football game performances on Friday nights and Saturday competitions in October. Like any other competitive group, the “season” is the busiest. Fall is our “season.”
What is the marching band fee? Please see our website for current costs. We incourage you to have your students use are fundraising options to defer costs. Be sure to see our fundraising opportunities and student accounts pages.
How good do I have to be? All students are admitted into the band program. Yes, even beginners!
Do I have to audition for the band? Yes. Just sign up to take a band class. Auditions will take place in April. Students should prepare all major scales, at least a 2 octave chromatic scale, and a prepared etude will be distributed by the end of February. Students are placed in classes based on the audition.
Will band fit into an aggressive academic schedule? Yes! We have students who are planning to enter all fields in college. The class schedule is made to allow these students to take a full schedule of classes (including AP) and play in one of the bands during all four years. The West Springfield Band is comprised of some of the highest achieving students in the school. Band members become academically responsible through their time in the program.
Will I struggle to keep my grades up? Whether you are in activities, or not, good grades are dependent upon being a good worker. If you are conscientious and organized, band, or any other activity, will not adversely affect your grades. The bands’ schedules have been carefully developed to work with the school’s academic demands.
How much time does band REALLY take? Are their after school requirements? There are occasional after school rehearsals and concerts including assessment.
Can I play sports and be in band? Yes! Quite a few band students participate in athletics. Talk to students and Mr. Hoang!
Is there a cost associated with being in band? There is an annual band fee and some may choose to rent instruments. Our Band Boosters hold fundraisers throughout the year to help defray program costs for students.
Would you like to speak to another band parent? We have a new mentoring program. We can put you in touch with a band family who has done this before.
